On 28th February 2026, the unveiling of the Tommy Gemmell Statue brought the people of Craigneuk together in a strong show of local pride. Celtic and Scotland legend Tommy Gemmell was a member of the Lisbon Lions side that won the European Cup in 1967 and scored in the final victory over Internazionale. Although widely known for his football achievements, the focus of the day was firmly on his connection to the community.
Gemmell grew up in Craigneuk, played for local side Meadow Thistle at 14, and began his working life as an apprentice electrician at the Ravenscraig steelworks after leaving Wishaw High. Even at the start of his professional career in 1961, he continued working at Ravenscraig, earning just £8 a week while travelling daily from home — a reminder of his grounded, working-class roots.
Martin McCrum of the Tommy Gemmell Project Committee highlighted the collective effort behind the statue, thanking sculptor Andy Edwards and everyone involved in bringing the project to life.
He described the statue as a fitting tribute, capturing Gemmell’s determination and character. More importantly, he emphasised that the monument stands as a lasting symbol for Craigneuk — recognising one of its own and celebrating the strength and spirit of the community that shaped him.
